From Edmunds InsideLine:

ZL1. Camaro guys have this name embossed on their psyche. It marked a handful of 1969 COPO Chevy Camaros that featured aluminum 427s that were known for being grossly underrated. If you want an old Camaro, this is the one you want.
And now the badge is back on the trunk of the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1. This one features a 6.2-liter supercharged LSA producing "at least" 550 horsepower. The "at least" part was repeated frequently. After that comes a six-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter, heavy-duty driveshaft, revised limited-slip differential and big 20-by-11-inch forged aluminum wheels with 305/35 Goodyear Eagle F1 G:2 tires. The front wheels measure 20-by-10 with 285-width tires. There's also a dual-mode exhaust just like the Corvette.
The ZL1 is being pitched as a Camaro that's "intended to reach optimal lap times on top road-racing circuits" and it does so with a two-mode, second-generation magnetic ride control (sport and tour modes) and fixed-caliper Brembo brakes (front and rear -- unlike a certain GT500). The body, whileTransformers inspired, is wind-tunnel proven and does generate additional downforce.
According to Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for the Camaro, the ZL1 has more manageable torque than the GT500 -- the ZL1's chief competitor. Which is good for going fast in control, but man, stomping the GT500's go pedal from ANY speed and getting wheelspin is half the fun, no?
Oppenheiser also went on to say that unlike previous generations of cars -- and previous generations of GM -- the Camaro program isn't mandated to slot below the Corvette in price or performance. If there's a market for a Camaro that will mop the floor with a Corvette, they'll build it. They'll be building this one starting in the first quarter of 2012.
Additional iterations of the ZL1 are already being discussed, including a Boss 302 fighter and a drag racing package.
Oh, and for what it's worth, there was specific mention that GM still owns the rights to Z28 and it's not afraid to use it should the right product come along.
